The Wisdom of Clouds: What the hell is going on with the Cloud Computing group on Google?

  • samj · 1 year ago
    Hi James,

Thanks for your this post; I was starting to wonder whether I was the only one in the community dismayed by these events.

Regarding my having "said something controversial about Enomalism or something", au contraire, I have been nothing but supportive of Enomalism (even if critical of private clouds) but like many I've had enough of waiting.

Given their behaviour thus far I think it's most unlikely that they will open the LinkedIn and Google groups sufficiently and have been busy building a completely open cloud-community over at http://cloudcommunity.org/, starting with the wiki and bill of rights. Even if we don't get all 3,500 lurkers we only need a few of the top talkers and these two will be left bantering with each other again.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong though (actually that was the point), just like I'd be happy to be proven wrong about Enomalism - maybe that's why they've been quiet... they're busy tending to the fires?

Others have complained about the moderation on the list: http://groups.google.com/group/cloud-computing/....

I've heard folks joke that their posts are delayed so that Reuven is able to post on the topic first, but I don't think anyone really believes that :-)

It is frustrating to many people and an open, transparent community would be nice.

    James,
are you allowed to post personal photos without permission?
  • Reuven Cohen · 1 year ago
James, just to be clear I am not a moderator of the google cloud group, nor does it have anything to do with Enomaly. I am just an active poster. If you have issues with moderation you need to address Khaz.

Although I don't agree with Sam's rather blunt and personal approach, he is correct. If you don't like the groups management, you can always go create your own group with your own rules which I'd probably join.

I am a member of the group, here is my opinion if you will:

    1) "and promoted by many of us participating in its discussions..."
promoting ourselves/blogs/products/company would be more correct

    2) "... number 3 poster..."
Here's statistics, I think Sam (or you) should learn math first :
    All time
    261 Reuven (Enomaly Inc)
    203 Khazret Sapenov
    150 Sassa
    71 CW
    70 rnug...@yahoo.com
    65 bnewport
    56 Stuart Charlton
    56 s...@samj.net
    55 Jim
    52 Chris S

I'd recommend Sam's wordy posts as a remedy against insomnia,
since it is hard to understand what he is talking about.
56 posts every night before going to bed, would cure it.

    3) I agree with Reuven,
you may always create your own "transparent" group
where all members are equal and enjoy it.
Or try to overtake Slashdot, tell them how many posts you did :)

    Jeez, such a clown show

    Jeremy,

You caught me on Sam's stats. I didn't do my homework there, and I'll update to reflect that. However, that just means he is in the top 2% of members, not the top 1%.

Everyone promotes their stuff on that list. I'm not with a product company, so I'm not pushing product, but I certainly used my blog as post fodder (and more rarely did the reverse). So did Reuven, botchagalupe, etc., etc., etc.

Finally, I have no desire to take over anything. I thought I was a part of a community, with a certain level of community self policing. I was wrong. I can't speak for Sam.

However, you and Reuven are right about one thing. I can take my discussions elsewhere.

    "Jeremy",

Ignoring for a second that you are an unregistered user with no history (except for, like Reuven, having a problem with James reposting photos) and that you are defending an essentially indefensible position:

    1. False, and irrelevant anyway as members do promote the group externally, as demanded.

    2. The quote (which you conveniently truncated) was "as the #3 poster at the time" and the stats (which you conveniently omitted) were for "This Month". I've (unsurprisingly) slipped a few spots (still #8 for "All Time") but stats aside, the point is that I was a key contributor.

And as for the post being wordy, if you're going to take on the (self-proclaimed) poster child of cloud computing, you want to be well prepared to defend your position... as you have demonstrated.

    3. We have (and you're welcome to join).

    1. you bitching because they kicked you out and you can't promote your lil business? or you have nothing else to do? :)

    2. "key contributor" ?!!
    give me a break, please
To me you are same as Martha Stewart as cloud computing expert so no matter how many posts you did :)

    3. I have taken a closer look at your site: made by Sam and owned by Sam, whatever you claim on home page :)
Thank you but no thank you

Wow, for an AC poster you obviously feel very strongly about our having access to an open community... one of those photos you so desparately want removed isn't yours is it? :P

One balanced post about one of my businesses in response to another which directly referenced it... and for "Jeremy" what one post ever bitching about cloud computing security and offering no solutions? Hmm...

Anyway I couldn't give a rat's ass who owns the community (nor whether it has 10 members or 10,000) so long as it's stable and open. If you don't believe our commitment then you are most welcome to stay right where you are.

    Cheers,

    Sam
